Kiara Pipino, Italy/Illinois U.S.A

Kiara Pipino is an Italian theatre director who lives and works in the USA and in Italy. She is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Acting and Directing at King University and as the Director of the Siena Study Abroad Theatre Program for StudyInItaly. In the meantime, she works in NYC directing for the United Solo Festival and teaching workshops at Playwrights Horizons. In Italy, she is the Artistic Director and Resident Director of the Festival Internazionale Valle Christi.
Kiara is a member of SDC and ATHE, with an ongoing collaboration with PACT as a director for the new play festival.
She holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Arkansas and the Michael Chekhov Teaching Certification from GLMCC and Mount Union University.
Her book, Theatre and Pietas, has been published by Trento University Press.
Her most recent credits include: Almost, Maine (KCACTF Award for Excellence in Directing), The Good Doctor, As You Like It.
Acting with the Michael Chekhov technique
The workshop will explore some of the tools of the technique introduced by Michael Chekhov, the Russian actor who worked closely with Stanislavksi prior moving to the U.S.A.
The workshop will allow students to explore elements of the technique, such including archetype, psychological gestures, plastiques and qualities of movements and to have a better understanding of the overall Chekhovian approach to acting.
Michael Chekhov’s work, despite being very physical and tied to the specificity of gesture life, is able to allow actors to access their emotions and their inner lives effectively. It triggers honest, repeatable reactions that can immediately be applied to the text and or to character analysis.
It’s an inside/out technique that has “no strings attached”: it only works when you need it to work and doesn’t leave you an emotional baggage that might interfere with your normal, everyday life.
