The Voice ~ The Artist’s Instrument
This workshop focuses on activating the voice as a finely tuned instrument essential to convey the nuances of artistic and creative expression. Actors will gain insight into their voice’s unique potential as a potent tool in bringing a character to life and in illuminating emotions, intentions, and meaning. We’ll investigate the interconnected relationships between breath-energy-sound, alignment-articulation-language, musicality-rhythm-imagination, and impulse-inspiration-action. Through exploration, theatre artists will build an awareness of their body as a vessel for the vocal instrument discovering new dynamics and expanding tonal range. With this integration, a deeper understanding of ‘being in the moment’ can be realized for creating richly textured performances. Improvisation, solo and group games, spoken word and singing, and music and movement will evolve into short performance pieces. Participants will also learn healthy practices, exercises for releasing tensions, and warm-up techniques to support their natural voice on stage, and in life with greater freedom, clarity and authenticity. Please bring a short memorized text or poem and wear comfortable loose clothes.
