Hunter Gates, Canada 2026

Hunter Gates is a theatre director, producer, performer, teacher, and lecturer with over 30 years of experience in the arts. Known for her fearless approach to character, embodiment, and transformation, she centers her work on physical intelligence, compassionate playfulness, and commanding presence. Her creative spaces are marked by warmth, wit, and unwavering rigor—where vulnerability becomes strength and play becomes profound.
Currently Executive Artistic Director at the Empress Theatre in Alberta, Canada, she sustains a lifelong dialogue between classical tradition and bold contemporary performance.
As an artist, Hunter brings a rare blend of gravitas, charm, and emotional transparency to every role. Noted for her subtlety and depth, she shapes characters with precision and lived-in truth, offering luminous warmth and spontaneity that invite audiences in. Balancing wit with vulnerability and strength with softness, she teaches with nuance, connects with sincerity, and leaves a lasting impression long after the audience leaves the theatre or the student leaves the studio.

Becoming Otherwise

An immersive theatre workshop designed to expand the actor’s expressive range through imaginative embodiment and integration.
Participants begin by exploring character development through animal, element, and color, pushing physical characters from mundane movement into exceptional personalities. By engaging with unexpected textures, impulses, and imaginative embodiment, performers reframe character creation and unlock radical shifts in perspective, cultivating presence, nuance, and physical originality.
The workshop then moves to the fusion of movement and voice through the lens of speakers, poets, and authors. Participants blend interpretive characters with spoken word to create dynamic theatrical experiences for themselves and their audiences. They experiment with how gesture, rhythm, and vocal expression can interact to tell a story in a fully embodied way. This work enables performers to craft pieces that are visually striking, emotionally resonant, and alive with imaginative possibility.
